White Teeth

WhiteTeethCover2new

This image is an Adobe Illustrator design that I created for the EE1704 Creativity for Digital Media module. It is a cover for the book White Teeth by Zadie Smith – the cover image features icons representing the main themes of the book:teeth, chance, travel and immigration, genes, genetic modification and conflict between people.

Rope

Aboard the HMS Warrior were several bundles and coils of thick rope, used for rigging or docking the ship at a port. A close-up photo like this allows the fine details of the rope to be appreciated where otherwise they might be overlooked – for example, how each strand is made up of many more smaller strands, all woven together. This photo was also taken using an iPhone camera, and I’m quite impressed at the clarity and level of detail.

Barrels

These barrels were located in the Navy Dockyard in Portsmouth, UK. A sort of repeating pattern is created because of the spacing and location of the barrels and the posts they are fastened to. I think this photo is effective as it raises more questions than it answers – what is in the barrels, and why are they fastened down? There are also smaller details that could be missed at first glance, such as the screws and nails on the barrels, and the reflections in the water collected in the rim.

Divide

Despite being fairly simple and straightforward, I think this photo is very visually appealing. The strong diagonals of the railings and wooden planks easily catch the eye and create a strong divide between the nature on one side and the man-made on the other. The vibrance of the leaves and bushes works well with the black and brown of the metal and wood. This photo was taken in Portsmouth, UK on an iPhone.

Chocolate

LindtThis photo was taken on the recent photography trip to Portsmouth, UK, however I am using it for the task requiring a photo edited using masks, blends and channel manipulation. Using a background layer, I enhanced the red of the wrappers using the RGB layers tool, before creating a duplicate grayscale layer. Then, using the mask feature, I removed portions of the layer to allow the colours to show through.

Boat

Boat HeaderThis image was taken in Portsmouth, UK. It is a close-up of the hull of an upturned rowing boat – clearly painted blue at one point, but now scratched and discoloured from years of seawater and hauling the boat along the sand and concrete to where it is kept. There is a lot of detail in the scratches, with every small section of the hull being unique. Even though it was taken with just an iPhone camera, I am really pleased with the detail and colours. I also like the way that you can’t tell what the photo is of – until the explanation, it is just an interesting pattern.

Urban

Urban HeaderThis photo was taken in Westminster Underground Station, London. The staircases, escalators and columns create interesting diagonals and perspective. Visually, the photo is complicated and there is lots going on, this is compensated for by the bland, grey-white colours of the metal and concrete. It sometimes takes a few seconds to understand actually what the photo is of, which is a feature I like.
